The omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) cannot be produced by the body itself if the corresponding precursors are not present.
Attention was drawn to omega-3 fatty acids through observations of the indigenous people of Greenland. A large part of their diet consists of marine fish, which are particularly rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
